Understanding Whiplash Injuries From An Accident In Texarkana
What is Whiplash?
Whiplash is the commonly used term to describe how the head and spine are ‘whipped‘ violently back and forth quickly from a motor vehicle accident or another sudden trauma (like seen in many sports injuries).
The forces cause a rippling motion in the spine similar to that of a whip as it goes out and back.
This motion puts a lot of stress on the delicate tissues of the spine and nervous system.
In whiplash, the small spinal joints (between vertebrae), discs, ligaments, muscles, and nerve roots may become damaged.
Central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) structures can also be injured in many cases.
What Are the Common Symptoms of Whiplash?
Symptoms of whiplash do vary depending on many factors.
Often a person may not experience many symptoms for a day or two after the collision. The symptoms frequently worsen over the next several days and may take up to two weeks or so to feel most of the effects from the trauma.
People experiencing whiplash often develop one to many of the following symptoms,
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Headaches
- Pain in the shoulder area or between the shoulder blades
- Low back pain
- Muscle spasms
- Pain, numbness, or tingling in the arm and/or hand
- Dizziness
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering
- Irritability, sleep disturbances, fatigue, …
The symptoms are caused from injury to different soft tissues of the spine, nervous system, and other areas.
