Additional Evidence For The Ketogenic Diet Improving Immunity
Interestingly the intimidating sounding 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) might help starve COVID-19 by depriving viral infected cells of glucose and reducing the virus’ way it hides from the immune system.
Many viruses “hide” from our immune system so it can grow and spread through your cells while preventing our immune system from attacking it.
2-Deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) is used in anti-cancer treatments that involve radio and chemotherapy and oxidative stress. 2-DG is a glucose analog that inhibits glycolysis. Glycolysis is the process our cells use to create ATP (energy) from sugar.
2-DG essentially mimics some of the effects of a ketogenic diet.
This is very interesting in that it provides additional evidence that a ketogenic diet would improve viral immunity by reducing sugar to the viral infected cells so that it can not divide quickly and spread.
This is the same mechanism for which a ketogenic diet can reduce cancer cells replication as seen in some research papers.
