No one starts off wanting to get addicted to an opiate.
Travis, like so many others, was prescribed opiates after being injured.
He didn’t realize he would become addicted or what that would mean.

The Opiod Epidemic
The US has about 5% of the world’s population. We consume 70% of the world’s opiates.
These are massive numbers.
Opiates are destroying people, costing so many lives, and are responsible for most drug overdoses.
Opiods are commonly prescribed for a musculoskeletal pain like back pain.
6% of those on an opiate for ONE week will be on opiates a year later.
After 30 days, close to one third of those people are on opiates in a year. One month of an opiate also causes a loss of brain mass.
A sharp rise in babies born addicted to opiates has occurred.
Overdoses involving opioids killed more than 47,000 people in 2017, and 36% of those deaths involved prescription opioids.

- One in three Medicare Part D beneficiaries received a prescription opioid in 2016,
- About 500,000 beneficiaries received high amounts of opioids,
- Almost 90,000 beneficiaries are at serious risk, and

This is insane.
Non-drug options have to be pushed for non-cancer pain.
Most of the people dying and suffering began an opiate for a musculoskeletal pain.
They had no idea that the pain they would end up experiencing would be so much worse.
