Ketogenic Diets Help Migraine Headaches.
A significant amount of evidence suggests that migraines are often associated with changes in metabolic factors in the brain resulting in losses of energy or oxidative stress levels that exceed the brain’s antioxidant capacity.
Adaption to a ketogenic diet leads to the production of ketone bodies for energy. Ketone bodies can improve the brain’s energy (metabolism) has excellent potential in preventing migraines.
Ketones are an alternative fuel source for the brain which bi-pass problems with glucose metabolism and transport that is often seen in migraines.
Recent research has shown that ketones (notably β-hydroxybutyrate) act as signaling molecules which improve the brain’s energy production as well as improving other pathways that are thought to be involved in migraines.
Ketones improve mitochondrial functioning (the cell’s powerhouses), oxidative stress, brain excitability (which is one reason a ketogenic diet can help people with seizures), inflammation, and the gut microbiome. This is shown in the illustration above
