Texarkana Pain Sufferers…
A Recent Article In Pain Management News Makes A Very Strong Argument FOR Chiropractic’s Role In Treating People Suffering With Chronic Pain.
Here are some of the important points about Chiropractic from the Pain Management article…
Chiropractic started in 1894, when DD Palmer made the first Chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic quickly spread due to it’s effectiveness in helping people that have a variety of conditions.
Chiropractic focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of various neuro-musculoskeletal conditions of the spine, extremities, and the nervous system’s control of our body.
The nervous system component has been discussed since the very beginning of Chiropractic within the context of how our musculoskeletal system influences and is influenced by our nervous systems.
These are often painful conditions including injuries (car accidents, work injuries, sports injuries, falls, etc), migraines, other headaches, neck pain, shoulder/upper back pain, lower back pain, sciatica, disc problems, arthritis, … but can include many other problems in these systems.
Chiropractic is often referred to as the leading complementary or alternative health care profession.
Of course now Chiropractic has become very mainstream. It is the 2nd largest primary health care discipline behind medical.
The best Chiropractors focus on finding out the cause of a problem, prescribe a treatment plan to correct the health concern/painful condition, make lifestyle recommendations to further aid the healing process, improve health, and reduce future problems.
These recommendations often include how to improve your diet to reduce pain, inflammation, improve health, and reduce weight that can be placing more stress on the neuro-musculoskeletal system.
Chiropractic is a well-established health care profession that is Primary Care in the following sense…
You do not need a referral to see a Chiropractor and Chiropractors frequently are the first point of contact for a person with a health concern, typically neuro-musculoskeletal in nature.
Chiropractors are well trained to diagnose health problems.
A good Chiropractor will perform a thorough consultation and examination. This will be followed by recommendations for additional testing as necessary that may include x-rays, CT scans, MRI, nerve tests, lab tests, and more.
Referrals are made to the appropriate other specialists for problems that require either co-management or different types of non-Chiropractic Care.
Chiropractic Treatment is best known for spinal manipulation (also called an adjustment), but the best Chiropractors also treat with other treatments and also other areas of the body outside the spine.
The best Chiropractors also spend time helping educate their patients about positive lifestyle factors to help them function at their best and minimize future problems.
Dr. Hagebusch has helped thousands of Texarkana residents with a variety of problems ranging from injuries to migraines, headaches, extremity problems (shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hips, knees, ankles, and feet), other joint problems (like TMJ pain), pinched nerves, disc injuries, arthritis, scoliosis, and many more complex neurological problems that effect the neuro-musculoskeletal system ranging from helping people that have Parkinson’s, vertigo, dizziness, painful autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, and much more.
Chiropractic isn’t a ‘cure‘ for some of these problems, but may help the person feel better and function better which can significantly improve their lives.
Chiropractic is well researched and proven to help people suffering from many problems.
This is a direct quote from the article (see link at the bottom of the page)…
“In two meta-analyses—published in 20101 and a follow-up in 20142—peer-reviewed literature was reviewed to determine the strength of scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of manual treatment for both musculoskeletal (MSK) and non-musculoskeletal (non-MSK) conditions.
- Bronfort et al1 reviewed 49 recent relevant systematic reviews, 16 evidence-based clinical guidelines and 46 randomized controlled trials not yet included in the former. They identified 26 categories of conditions treated with manual therapy, consisting of 13 MSK conditions, four types of chronic headache and nine non-MSK conditions.
- In conclusion, SMT/mobilization was found to be effective in adults for acute, subacute and chronic low back pain; migraine and cervicogenic headache; cervicogenic dizziness; and for several extremity joint conditions.
- Of note, thoracic manipulation/mobilization was reportedly effective for acute and subacute neck pain, but the evidence was inconclusive for cervical manipulation/mobilization alone for neck pain of any duration.
- SMT/mobilization also was inconclusive for middle back pain, sciatica, tension headache, coccydynia, temporomandibular joint disorders, fibromyalgia, premenstrual syndrome and pneumonia.
- It also was not found effective for asthma, dysmenorrhea when compared with sham SMT, or for stage 1 hypertension when added to an antihypertensive diet.”
The researchers in the studies mentioned above recommend more research needs to be done for Chiropractic treatment of some of these non-neuromusculoskeletal problems. These conditions are not the focus of chiropractic care, but it’s interesting to see some improvement in people that have these types of problems.
As an aside, one of the challenges of getting the research done is getting funding for large trials.
Chiropractic does not have large pharmaceutical companies funding the research.
This does happen for medications of course.
Unfortunately the government also does not spend much money funding Chiropractic research. The vast majority of government funding goes to drug research.
This leads to more drug research being done than research on other treatments.
Fortunately, Chiropractic has still published an incredible amount of studies supporting Chiropractic Care in spite of the funding issues.
