Neck Pain
In this video discover how neck pain has an impact on sensorimotor function… effecting the brain, balance, coordination, movement, posture, and motor control.
What is Sensorimotor Function?
The video above mentions a study that looked at how neck pain effected sensorimotor function in older people.
Researchers measured several important factors including balance and eye movements.
The researchers found that people with neck pain couldn’t control their balance or eye movements as well as similar people without neck pain.
The researchers believed that the people with neck pain had altered communication between the body and brain in those with neck pain that resulted in problems with controlling muscles related to balance and movement.
This would make sense.
Losses of appropriate input into the brain would likely effect the brain’s ability to create an appropriate motor output.
This resulted in altered balance and greater risks of falling.
Other past research has found that chiropractic treatment can improve the input into the brain improving the brain’s ability to tell what is happening in and around the body.
Interestingly, even in the absence of pain abnormal function of spinal joints has been found to cause problems with input and output of our brain.
Research has demonstrated that chiropractic treatment of the spine can improve a person’s ability to know where their ankle is in space even with the person’s eyes closed (proprioception). This is important for posture, movement, balance, and sports performance… as well as reducing risks of falls.
It has also shown that a person is able to step more quickly after a series of chiropractic adjustments.
This is important again for reducing risk of falling and for sports performance.
Chiropractic care has been shown to improve the brain’s processing of information from the eyes and ears. This is related to the way our brain integrates various sensory inputs together.
Chiropractic care has been shown to help so many people with neck pain and this is something confirmed every day in our Texarkana office.
However, there is much more to Chiropractic treatment than improving neck pain and so many people without neck pain can benefit from Chiropractic Treatment.
The video above talks about how Chiropractic helps improve function through improving communication between our body and our brain so that the brain can work better.
Improving function improves our health, how we feel, and perform in our daily activities.
