Improving our health is more important today than ever.
The recent coronavirus pandemic has really exposed us to the fact that diabetes and obesity don’t just increase your risk of dementia, cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and so many other serious problems but also increases risks from infections including covid as well as other infections.
These 2 issues, diabetes and obesity, are common and have serious impact on our metabolic health.
Metabolic health can be improved with the right lifestyle based approach whether a person is trying to lose weight, control blood sugar in diabetes, and in so many other chronic health problems. It does take an absolute commitment to doing what it takes over a long period of time. It’s persistent, consistent action that can help turn our metabolic health around.
Metabolic health in very simple terms refers to our ability to produce and maintain energy production. Many different factors are involved in this seemingly simple process. Factors include various hormones, including very significantly insulin which is the most common metabolic problem – chronically elevated insulin levels leading to insulin resistance. This means that the hormone loses some of it’s effectiveness as often seen in hypoglycemia and it’s progression into type 2 diabetes.
Other factors are critically important ranging from thyroid hormone level to chronic inflammatory conditions, anemias, lung problems and very notably – sedentary lifestyles which lead to failure of creating enough demand on cells to maintain their ability to maintain energy production.
Virta Health is an organization involved in improving metabolic health.
Check out what they found in a recent paper looking at people involved in improving their metabolic health with a lifestyle based intervention compared to those that did not and how they fared during covid.
Of course, there are many factors involved and this is just one piece of evidence. Still, it helps make the case that we should all focus on improving our health to reduce our risks.

Virta health focuses on improving metabolic factors like we so often do in our practice at Hagebusch Chiropractic.
This article linked below provides evidence that we can improve risks, even in the most susceptible people.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that if a person has good metabolic health that they won’t get very sick.
However, what’s the worst thing that will happen if a person improves their blood sugar level and loses weight? Regardless of the immune system, the person will likely feel better, have more energy, experience less pain, and reduce their risks of other serious diseases.
Improving your health is always a good idea when there is a viral pandemic or when there is not.
