I recently made a short trip to Dallas with my family to see my dad. It was a good trip and good to see him and my step family.
I have to admit that I really dislike sitting for too long like when driving even on a relatively quick trip like from Texarkana to Dallas.
The media ran so many headlines last year talking about how sitting was the new smoking because of prolonged sitting being associated with an early death. The truth is that we are designed to move a lot, not sit around every day staring at a computer and paperwork.
I think most people can relate to having some stiffness especially in your spine if you sit for too long.
Here are a couple of things that help reduce pain and stiffness when driving for a prolonged period of time.
Seat heaters do help some. Often turning on the seat heater for 15 minutes every hour can make a difference… improving circulation and reducing stiffness.
So does having the seats set in a good position which is fairly upright and not reclined back otherwise your neck comes forward to far away from the seat increasing neck and upper back strain.
This also helps if you happen to get in an accident which unfortunately in today’s distraction environment happens pretty often.
If your seat is reclined back, it can’t help stop some of the violent motion that will occur when your hit.
By the way if you do get in an accident, make sure you come in as soon as possible once you get back to Texarkana to get checked out.
You wouldn’t believe the amount of damage even a relatively low impact accident can do to our bodies.
Back to my advice about driving…
Mini-exercise breaks help a lot when on a road trip.
For example on the trip I mentioned above, I made a stop about midway to get in some movement.
It’s pretty easy with a kid.
I just challenged my daughter Carley to a game of tag and got in a series of sprints haha.
Keep these things in mind the next time you’re taking a road trip out of Texarkana.
- Seat position upright or close to it.
- Use seat heaters periodically.
- Take mini exercise breaks throughout the trip to get in some movement.
