New labeling laws are likely to continue to contribute to the growing problem with obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
It's not meant to do so, it's just the math.
Calories are made more prominent on the new labeling.
This means that manufacturers will continue to look at ways to reduce calories. This means that fat will likely be reduced because of it's higher per gram calorie count vs carbs and protein.
Calories do matter.
Unfortunately, that is only part of the story.
Our bodies are complex and have many different mechanisms controlling hunger and calorie storage.
Fat is the most satiating type of macronutrient. Meaning that when you eat fat, you feel full.
Carbohydrates ultimately have the opposite effect and tend to make you hungrier.
As far as storage, we have a very limited ability to store carbohydrates in our bodies.
Carb consumption is the strongest trigger of insulin, the body's storage hormone.
Over-consumption of carbs causes them to be transformed and stored as fat, causing a vast number of probable problems in the process.
High Carb, Low Fat Foods/Diets set up a process that is likely to make you eat more and store more food as fat.
