“Can A Gluten Free Diet Help Fibromyalgia Sufferers?”
In some patients, it can make a huge difference. Often other dietary considerations need to be evaluated as well… BUT check out some of the research on gluten free diets and fibromyalgia below.
Plus it’s important to address musculoskeletal problems with the right Chiropractic Care can make a huge difference in so many people suffering from Fibromylagia.
An Italian study published in 2015 described nutritional deficiencies found in fibromyalgia patients. Benefits of specific diet and nutritional supplementation were described.
From the study…
“Weight control is an effective tool to improve the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
It seems reasonable to eliminate some foods from the diet of FM patients, for example excitotoxins.
Non-celiac gluten sensitivity is increasingly recognised as a frequent condition with similar manifestations which overlap with those of FM.
The elimination of gluten from the diet of FM patients is recently becoming a potential dietary intervention for clinical improvement.”
Fibromyalgia and nutrition: what news? Clin Exp Rheumatol. 2015 Jan-Feb;33(1 Suppl 88):S117-25. Epub 2015 Mar 18. Rossi A1, Di Lollo AC2, Guzzo MP2, Giacomelli C1, Atzeni F3, Bazzichi L1, Di Franco M2.
A study published in 2013, found that there was a significant number of fibromyalgia patients that actually had celiac disease (an autoimmune disorder that is triggered by eating gluten).
The study reported, “The findings of this screening indicate that a non-negligible percentage of IBS/Fibromyalgia patients are celiac disease patients, whose symptoms can improve and in whom long-term celiac disease related complications might possibly be prevented with a strict lifelong gluten free diet.”
Interestingly, one of those complications from celiac disease is intestinal cancer and death. Other common findings include fatigue, brain fog, depression, digestive problems, and other problems commonly found in fibromyalgia patients.
A big question that could be asked to your doctor if you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms is,
“Have you screened me for celiac disease?”
There is potential reason to do so if you continue suffering.
Another recent study published in Arthritis Research & Therapy found improvement in fibromyalgia paitients with a gluten free diet.
The researchers studied the effect of a one-year gluten-free diet in patients with co-occurring IBS and fibromyalgia.
One of the groups in the study experienced significant improvement in all symptoms and an improvement in quality of life scores with the gluten free diet.

Of foods to avoid when treating fibromyalgia, gluten is a very important factor for many people.
Going gluten free is more challenging than you may think because of it’s presence in so many different things you probably have never considered.
This is why seeing a doctor that understands the ins and outs of eliminating gluten is an excellent idea.
It’s often not enough though. Here are some other general dietary considerations.
As noted above diet can help fibromyalgia sufferers.
