Neck Pain… What Is It And How To Get Rid Of It in Texarkana!
Neck Pain Is Common (But It’s Not Normal!)
Neck Pain effects about 14% of our population at any given time with pain that can interfere with daily activities at home, work, and hobbies.
Worse, those that experience neck pain are very likely to continue experiencing problems with it in the future.
This means that what we’re commonly doing for the treatment of Neck Pain as a society isn’t working.
What does work for Neck Pain?
I’ll get into that in a minute, but first…
Why is Neck Pain so Common?
It would be great if we could just point to one thing and tell you that this is the cause of all Neck Pain and why so many people get it. Unfortunately, it’s more complicated than that though.
We often put our Necks in positions that cause problems, either through repetitive motions and postures or in a sudden trauma.
Your neck’s mobility is both a blessing and a curse. We need to be able to turn our heads and move it in different directions. This necessary mobility makes the neck more suseptible to injury and pain.
If your neck is unable to sustain the stress or trauma of your life, then injury and/or pain results.
A good example of this is the ‘Whiplash‘ injury that occurs when someone is involved in a car accident. The sudden forces stretch, tear, and compress various parts of your neck and result in Whiplash Pain that can be a huge problem for people.
Other sudden injuries to the neck can occur due to a fall, hitting your head, or in sports like football or soccer.
Neck Pain can also occur from repetitive stresses.
This is more likely if you have a job that requires a lot of sitting, like office workers that do a lot of work at a desk or computer, etc.
Other jobs that require frequent looking down may increase your risk… like factory workers, nurses, and CNAs.
Many other factors also effect if and when you will get Neck Pain that are outside of the neck itself… these factors include everything from the way your unique nervous system is functioning to other disease processes to general inflammation related to different problems and more.
All these things and many more can lead to Neck Pain.
Whether you had a big injury from a car accident or some other major trauma – or if you developed it over time from repetitive stresses…
Your neck pain is often the result of mechanical problems in the neck that changes the way that it functions, the way it moves, resulting in pain. The specific pain generating source might be in the small joints that allow proper motion, the discs, the musculature, or the nervous system.
Mechanical problems in the neck can often result in wear and tear over time. A process commonly referred to as arthritis. It can also lead to a weakening of the soft discs resulting in disc herniations or bulges.
Loss of normal motion also results in feelings of stiffness, tension, and more pain in the neck.
Neck problems can also cause headaches, upper back area pain, shoulder pain, arm pain and/or numbness.
Neck Pain is a Very Serious Problem.
It doesn’t just cost you money by interfering with productivity. It can end up costing you the ability to do your normal activities and to enjoy your family, favorite activities, and your ability to enjoy life.
When you’re experiencing neck pain, it interferes with virtually every part of your life. You have trouble performing your normal work and home activities, doing yardwork, playing with you kids (or grandkids), participating in your favorite hobbies or sports, and even causes major problems with sleeping.
I know what you’re thinking,
“I’ve experienced most of these problems. I just want to get rid of it.”
If you’ve been suffering from neck pain, then you’ve probably tried many different things to get better… this might include things like trying heat or ice, topical creams, rest, over the counter pain relievers, etc.
This generally leads to seeking care in your family doctor’s office and the use of prescription pain relievers. When this fails, you usually end up having an MRI to better look at your neck.
Depending upon the results of the MRI, it’s often recommended to try Physical Therapy and/or spinal injections.
Some people may show improvement, unfortunately far too many don’t.
This leads to a visit with an orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon with 2 outcomes…
1. Surgery is recommended.
2. You’re told that there’s nothing that can be done and ‘you’ll have to learn to live with it.’
What can you do to finally get out of pain and get your life back?
The reality is that virtually every treatment for neck pain can help the right person with the right problem.
It’s important to realize that and to have cooperation between the various doctors that treat people with neck pain.
The question is where should you start and what should you try next?
Most people end up starting with more aggressive treatments before considering chiropractic and this can lead to a lot of frustration and wasted time, instead of quickly getting better.
I know, I’ve seen it thousand’s of times with other local Texarkana area people.
Commonly a person sees multiple doctors without improving before ending up in my office and finally getting relief.
The rightfully frustrated patient ends up coming in to see me after everything else fails only to find that they are able to quickly get out of pain and get their life back.
The amount of time and money spent before coming in is often staggering… not to mention often the months or years of suffering.
That’s time you will never get back.
Chiropractic Care should be considered first, not last if you’re suffering with Neck Pain. Here’s Why…
Chiropractic care is non-invasive, it doesn’t rely upon drugs or surgery. It’s a great place to
start.
Evidence from numerous clinical studies has shown that chiropractic treatment of the neck (cervical spine) result in rapid improvements in pain and physical function, as well as lasting, long-term pain relief.
As part of a comprehensive literature review, published in the March/April 2007 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, the researchers found “high-quality evidence” that patients with chronic neck pain showed significant improvement in their pain levels following chiropractic treatment. In fact, every group showed improvement 12 weeks after treatment.
According to the 2009 Mercer Research document, chiropractic significantly reduces cost of care when compared to standard medical care for neck pain. The review also found that chiropractic care was more effective than other treatments for neck pain.
What Are Your Other Treatment Options?
Medications may help ease your pain. The problem is that they do not address what caused your pain, plus there is another problem with chiropractic care that does not have the same side effects.
Unfortunately, medications used to treat the symptoms of neck pain also have side effects that can range from…
- serious stomach and kidney problems (as seen in many cases of long term use of over the counter pain relievers),
- liver problems,
- cardiovascular problems – including heart attacks and death,
- addiction (particularly with opiate pain relievers), and…
- increased body fat, bone loss, muscle loss, weakened connective tissue, and blood sugar problems (a side effect of steroids).
- Addiction associated with prescription pain medicine is now classified as an epidemic in the United States!
The number of spinal fusions has jumped an incredible 500 percent over the last decade!
It’s not that most surgeons are bad or looking to take advantage of you, it’s just that medical options are limited when it comes to helping people recover from Neck Pain.
This is the problem with our current mainstream approach to pain and musculoskeletal problems. It’s apparent that current approaches aren’t working for so many people because of how common the problem is and how likely these problems are to continue… becoming chronic and far too often causing life long problems.
Why should you consider Chiropractic first?
Chiropractic provides a primary care approach for the prevention, diagnosis and conservative management of back pain and spinal disorders that often allows patients to reduce or avoid the need for these riskier treatments that are more likely to have complications.
Very often conservative Chiropractic care can help. It can likely help you.
At Hagebusch Chiropractic, if we can’t help you – we’ll let you know and won’t waste your time. We’ll also give you advice on what is likely to help.
