How To Improve Asthma. Some very important info for people with asthma (or their parents)
Many common things cause asthma attacks.
Here are some you may not be aware of that could help you or your child avoid an attack, hospitalization, and even death (about 3,500 people in the US die every year from asthma).
There is also a good reason to check out this supplement that has been shown to reduce the number of severe asthma attacks requiring an ER visit and/or hospitalization by 50%.
Here are a few VERY important asthma triggers from the article (below).
Most people already realize tobacco smoke is a problem for asthmatics.
Here are 3 types of triggers that you may not know about.
1. Household chemicals often trigger asthma attacks.
- *Perfumes/colognes/body spray,
- *Scented laundry detergent,
- *Fabric softener,
- Scented candles,
- Air fresheners,
- Cleaning products,
- Glue, paint, and cooking fumes…
- Wood or gas stoves, fireplaces and gas or kerosene heaters can cause high levels of nitrogen dioxide in the air. This chemical can be an asthma trigger.
*Out of these chemicals these 3 are a VERY serious problem because they are exceptionally common AND end up being on the asthmatic all day (and night) long causing ongoing problems.
It’s also a problem because even if you don’t have asthma, you may walk past an asthmatic and cause an attack.
2. Food and Preservative Sensitivities
Here is a very limited list of common offenders.
Sulfites. Sodium bisulfate, potassium bisulfate, potassium metabisulfite, sodium sulfite and sulfur dioxide are examples.
Here are some foods that commonly contain sulphites (many others do as well).
- pickled foods and vinegar
- most dried fruits
- gravies and sauces
- frozen sea food
- many processed foods
- pre-packaged meals
- canned coconut milk
- beer, wine and cider.
- vegetable juices
- some soft drinks
- grape juice
Many other foods can cause some problems.
For example, Dairy is problematic for many asthmatics and dairy is in MANY more foods than you probably realize.
3. Medications (some possible problems for some asthmatics)
- Some medications also contain sulfites.
- Beta blockers
- NSAIDS (ibuprofen/motrin, naproxen aspirin,…) may cause acute asthma attacks in some individuals.
- Talk to your pharmacist if you have a question about any medication.
If you or your child have poorly controlled asthma, eliminating these things is a great place to start. It could very well save a life.
