Chiropractic Spinal Care Improves Strength and Reduces Fatigue
In this video we look at research undertaken to see how chiropractic care can help increase strength through some interesting brain changes measured by researchers in a 2014 study.
Spinal Function Changes Leg Strength
A 2014 study looked at the effect of Chiropractic on Leg Strength and specifically measured the brain’s drive to the muscles in the legs before and after one chiropractic treatment of the spine compared to people not receiving a chiropractic adjustment of the spine.
The chiropractic treatment group saw an average force increase of 16% from one adjustment.
The control group was actually weaker with another contraction.
The study demonstrates that chiropractic treatment can help with improving strength.
Interestingly, the 16% increase was about equal to changes seen with 3 weeks of strength training.
The researchers then followed up testing elite athlete martial artists and found even in well trained athletes, similar results were found…
Chiropractic spinal treatment improved strength and endurance.
The spine and it’s function are exceptionally important to both the nervous system and the muscular system.
Improving spinal function helps force production and endurance in the extremities which was demonstrated.
Other studies have shown chiropractic care can improve balance, coordination, and reduce risk of injuries.
This is in addition to reducing pain, muscle spasms, stiffness, and improving injury recovery times commonly thought of with chiropractic treatment.
The big idea here is that our bodies work together as a whole.
Movement and force production require knowing where our body is in space which can be compromised with joint problems.
It requires us to use this knowledge to plan and coordinate all the muscle activity involved…
Including the use of stabilization muscles so that when we reach an arm or move a leg the weight change doesn’t off balance us.
Spinal dysfunction reduces some of our body’s ability to stabilize and generate force…
But there is much more to this as evidenced in this research showing changes in drive from the brain indicating a more central brain based effect of chiropractic treatment.
If we have dysfunction in any area of our body, it will have some far reaching effects in other areas.
A lot of these effects are through the nervous system which is the ‘master control’ system of everything that happens through out our bodies.
It’s important to understand the importance of musculoskeletal problems that might be causing pain, spasms, stiffness, and tightness.
These very common problems do disrupt our lives making us hurt, causing us to lose sleep, interfere with our work, family, and hobbies.
These symptoms of pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms are just the tip of the iceberg though.
The dysfunctional joints and movements will cause our joints to breakdown and in the case of the spine, discs also begin to breakdown.
Other changes are occurring resulting in changes with coordination, balance, strength, and endurance.
Postural changes occur as your brain receives inaccurate or incomplete information from your body. This places you at greater risk of injury.
Chiropractors identify dysfunctional areas so that they can restore appropriate information flow between the body and the brain.
The right Chiropractic Care improves these problems allowing your body to function better. Of course, you’ll feel better but more importantly you can be better!
