Poor Slouched Posture Causes Much More Than Pain and Stiffness
In this video we look at how Chiropractic care can help with posture. The video discusses the inter-relationship between many problems abnormal or poor posture is associated with more neck pain, headaches, upper back pain and stiffness, back pain, shoulder pain, reduced ability to breathe deeply (very important), and more.
The Far Reaching Effects Of Poor Posture.
A 2007 study mentioned looked at how people with upright posture versus having slouched posture were able to deal with a very stressful reading task.
With good upright posture the people were better able to handle the stressful task.
Maybe even more importantly the people with good upright posture had a better mood, higher self esteem, and less fear than slouched postures were seen.
Forward Head Posture
Your head is relatively heavy at about 6.5 lbs give or take. It’s designed to sit on top of your spine with weight distributed equally.
Problems occur as it drifts forward placing a very heavy burden on the soft tissues of your neck and upper back area that are not designed to withstand these forces.
This abnormal posture is a growing epidemic.
In part because virtually every man, woman, and child is now looking down at computers, tablets, and phones for many hours a day.
This forward head posture is being called ‘text neck‘ to give you an idea about a primary cause.
Of course, we’re also maybe guilty of not exercising as much to strengthen our bodies is also adding to the problem.
An ever increasing number of kids and teens are developing neck pain, back pain, and headaches related to these abnormal postures.
These are not ‘growing pains.’
Spinal problems and spinal pain don’t magically resolve on it’s own when we hit adulthood.
These problems set up the young people for a lifetime of problems.
It would make more sense to treat and correct spinal dysfunction in kids and teens than wait to see if the problems disappear on their own as they get older.
We know that this is not likely to happen. The problems will continue, be bigger, and more difficult to correct later.
We think about taking our kids to the dentist when they have dental pain to correct the problem because we know it can and will get worse.
The same is true when a child or young adult has headaches or spinal pain and symptoms.
It would make sense to go to the chiropractor to correct the problem.
Taking a step back beyond pain though, earlier indicators before pain are changes in posture, clumsiness, coordination problems are pretty easy to see
Have you ever noticed that an ever growing number of adults, teens, and even kids have poor slumped postures?
Abnormal posture makes it difficult to exercise, play a sport, do normal household activities, increase risk of injury when a trauma like a car crash occurs,…
And as mentioned above reduces ability to breathe properly thereby reducing oxygen which has an impact on mental and physical performance.
The study above found poor posture was associated with reduced resilience when faced with a difficult task, worse moods, lower self esteem, and greater fears.
If our bodies are functioning properly, we don’t have symptoms.
The ‘symptom‘ of poor posture is one example.
It is a symptom of underlying dysfunction in the neuro-musculoskeletal system. These problems can have far reaching effects beyond pain.
Of course it might be increasing pain, but many other things are happening as well that are not good for our bodies.
Medications can’t change these physical problems even if they help with the symptom like pain or muscle spasms temporarily.
This is why we should think about seeing a chiropractor to help these problems hopefully before a major problem develops just like you would see a dentist hopefully before your have a major dental problem.
Your spine is more important in so many ways.
You can pull a tooth if necessary and in the case of kids a new one is waiting beneath the surface.
You can not pull a vertebrae. You’re stuck with the ones you have and so are your kids.
Most people see a Chiropractor for some painful spinal conditions and injuries. Of course Chiropractic helps these spinal problems as well as other types of injuries to the extremities.
However, there is much more to it though and you can find evidence for this through out this Texarkana Health Blog with posts ranging from functional neurology to back pain, neck pain, whiplash, migraines, vertigo, diet, sleep, and a lot more.
Our job as chiropractors is to move you toward this improved function and health as much as possible using conservative care with different types of physical treatment, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, ergonomic and lifestyle recommendations.
These can have a massive, positive impact on not just relieving your pain and symptoms… but improving your health and wellness.
Chiropractic and Posture
Chiropractors identify dysfunctional areas of the spine and correct them with various ways so that they can restore appropriate flow of information between the body and the brain.
