Many different injuries can cause hip pain and problems after an accident.
Injuries to many other areas are also common including to the neck (‘whiplash‘), upper back, shoulders, low back, and more.
Below are some of the most common causes of hip pain after a car collision.
Hip Sprain
Hip sprains are damage to the ligaments that connect the hip to the pelvis.
These tears can range from mild to severe.
Generally the sprains will cause pain in the hip area and movement of the hip, even passively (by the chiropractor) may likely cause greater pain.
Hip Muscle Strain
Muscles also connect the hip to the pelvis. Forces can stretch and tear the muscle fibers that support and move the hip. This is called a muscle strain.
Muscle pain and pain around the hip are common symptoms of muscle strain. There could possibly be swelling, bruising, and even weakness.
Contracting the injured muscle will cause additional pain in cases of muscle strain.
Pressure to the injured muscle will generally cause additional pain.
Other Hip Joint Injuries
Injury to the joint cartilage surface can occur in an accident.
This may occur when your knee is driven into the dash or your hip is driven into the door during the collision.
This can cause the soft cartilage surface to be forcibly compressed between the bones.
Sacroiliac Sprains and Joint Damage
This is a very common cause of pain in the hip area after an accident.
The pain will generally be located more towards the back of the hip and may extend into the back of the hip/butt area.
Pain from this injury may also have some radiation into the leg.
Generally pain from an SI (Sacroiliac Joint) injury will increase when the hip or back is extended backwards. Rotation of the back and hips will also like increase the pain.
Referred or Radiating Pain
Hip pain may be from another area including the low back or even some internal damage.
The low back would be a very common cause of pain after an accident that may refer pain into the hip and leg area. This pain may be ‘sciatica‘ which describes a pain shooting down your leg.
Injury to the low back, ligaments, joints, and discs that can cause problems with the nerves that exit there may cause hip pain and weakness.
