Car Accidents Cause Neck Pain and Many Other Serious Problems
A common occurrence, you’re stopped at a light and without warning you’re struck from behind.
Your car jolts forward taking you along for a ride… except your not made of metal and not all your body parts are thrown around at the same speed.
It’s this discrepancy in movement between your different body parts that accounts for what you feel later after the shock of the collision.
Your head is relatively heavy and not secured to the seat whereas generally a shoulder and your pelvis is connected.
This creates a situation where your head is violently thrown about on your relatively small neck.
The shoulder harness being across one shoulder forces a rotation of your head neck and even upper back.
You may strike the steering wheel, the door, the window, he dash, console, or something within the vehicle may strike you.
This is a situation that commonly happens and can be devastating to you in a crash.
You begin to feel neck pain…
You go to the ER after the crash because you’re already starting to feel neck pain.
It may not be too bad at first. Maybe you’re getting a headache maybe even a migraine already too.
Other things may be starting to hurt ranging from your back, shoulders, knees, hips, wrists, and more.
You just want to make sure you’re ok.
The ER doc spends a few minutes talking to you and tells you you’ll be sore for a few days and you’ll be fine.
What the ER doctor means by fine is that you’ll live.
He’s probably right, the question is how will you live?
Maybe you’ll live in pain, with chronic headaches, possibly with a pinched nerve that ends up causing permanent damage, or with a disc injury, a torn ligament, or something else?
The reality is that in the ER they have to triage people and decide what is a real emergency that threatens a person’s life.
They need to spend time trying to save these very serious situations.
The ER staff tells you to follow up with your doctor if the symptoms don’t go away.
As your body begins to react to the injured tissues over the next several days and maybe even weeks, you start to feel more pain, stiffness, muscle spasms, headaches, maybe even pain or numbness radiating into your extremities.
You call your family doctor that you’ve seen for years and tell them that you’ve been in an accident and need to make an appointment.
Unfortunately for you, most family doctors will not see someone involved in an accident.
It’s likely best anyway.
It’s not generally their area of expertise.
