Do you want to get more active to improve your health and wellness?
You have a lot of options to get started.
What exercise works best for most people to improve their health and wellness?
How long should you exercise, how hard, and what type of activity should you do?
Research looked at this and may have the answer.
Researchers looked at National Health and Nutrition Survey data from 2003 to 2006 and death rates.
About 4500 adults age 40 years or older were followed for about 7 years. Over that time there were 700 deaths.
The researchers estimated the amount and intensity of exercise for the individuals.
The greatest factor in reducing mortality was total amount of time spent being active, regardless of intensity.
They also found that increasing the intensity did further reduce death rates.
The best advice taken from this study and others is to simply get started exercising, even if it’s just walking at first.
Over time you can gradually increase the intensity.
You don’t have to go out and push your limits too hard at first.
A slow, progress approach is generally safer from an injury risk perspective as well as from a motivational perspective.
Just simply start moving. Gradually increase over time.
Take those first steps towards better health. Over time, consistent exercise will pay off.
