This post discusses the process of arthritis and what you can do about it.
In this post, arthritis will refer to the most common type which is called osteoarthritis or degenerative arthritis.
It’s the type of arthritis that occurs due to abnormal wear on the joints over a period of time.
This can start initially from an injury, repetitive stress, or types of things that you do on a daily basis over time.
The joint is damaged and this progressively worsens over time.
It’s a mechanical process that might result from stretched or torn ligaments allowing abnormal movement or more commonly due to mechanical restrictions and adhesions from past traumas that limit normal movement.
In many cases the damaged joint results in muscle spams, your body’s attempt to stabilize a problem area.
In any case, it’s generally a mechanical problem that begins due to some injury or repetitive stress.
Far too many people rely upon medication for their pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms. Pain relieving medications, whether prescription or over the counter, can temporarily help the symptoms.
Pain relievers fail to change underlying physical problems that are generally the cause of degenerative arthritis.
The symptoms associated with this process are not the actual problem. They are an indicator that you are developing problems. The symptoms are a warning for you that something is going wrong.
One of the most common health problems people experience is ‘arthritis.’
Osteoarthritis (also known as degenerative arthritis) occurs as your body reacts to abnormal mechanical problems in various joints whether that is in your neck, back, shoulder, knee or other areas.
This type of problem is progressive and continues to worsen without appropriate care that changes the physical problem.
Medications can help the symptoms, but do not alter the mechanical problems.
You may feel less pain when you take either an over the counter or prescription medication.
This can help and I’m not attempting to villify pain medicine.
The problem is that taking it can also contribute to worse problems for a variety of reasons.
For example, artificially reducing pain with medicine will cause you to not seek other care to correct the underlying cause of the pain.
Reducing the pain with medications also may lead to you to perform activities that will further damage the problem area because you do not have pain stopping you from doing the activity.
If we were to look inside you – looking at the problem area over time, we would see it get worse, just like in the x-rays of the neck shown to the right.
The basic idea behind treatment for arthritis is to recognize that it is a mechanical problem, a physical problem, that requires a physical treatment to improve.
This is where chiropractic comes in!
