"I have some knots in my lower back. What's causing them? Should I see a doctor? If so, what kind of doctor should I see?"
A recent question about lower back problems that is pretty commonly asked.
It’s not really possible to know in your case without seeing you in person.
There are many possibilities ranging from…
- A relatively benign and common like a muscle spasm or a focal muscle spasm referred to as a trigger point,
- to some anatomical difference in you are noticing,
- to possibly being the SI joints (many of my patients describe it this way and it’s often after their back began hurting)
- to a mass that might be something relatively benign like a focal fat mass or something very serious causing the mass.
Generally, I recommend starting with a chiropractor because…
- Chiropractors are generally very good at evaluating back problems.
- If the chiropractor finds something concerning, they will refer you out to see another doctor.
- If it is a musculoskeletal problem, then the chiropractor is very likely able to help you.
- And finally, I’m biased. I’m a chiropractor. I’ve seen thousands of patients with back problems and the vast majority of them get better with chiropractic care.
I would see someone to rule out anything serious and I think starting with a chiropractor is the best bet initially.
