A recent question was asked, "Can I go to the doctor for bad posture that I think is causing back pain? Is my doctor able to help me or will he feel like I'm wasting his time?
The answer is, "Yes you should go see someone."
Who? That's the big question!
Everyone has their own opinions about various types of doctors whether it's MDs, specialists, Chiropractors, or allied health professionals like PT's and OT's.
Often these opinions based on…
- what they’ve heard or
- maybe one experience they had with one doctor for a different condition, or
- in other cases it’s simply a lack of knowledge about options or why someone would go see a certain type of doctor.
If you’re problem is due to postural issues, then a chiropractor is the best starting point for you.
Medication generally can not help a postural issue. It often requires a physical approach to deal with physical problems.
Chiropractors on the other hand deal with postural issues and back pain on a daily basis with a significant amount of success.
Often the best approach for back pain and postural problems is chiropractic first followed by specific rehabilitation to address the problem that will be somewhat unique for you.
Chiropractors are very good at addressing abnormal biomechanics. Once the underlying movement pattern and muscle tone across joints is improved, the strengthening program is often much more effective.
Of course, it depends on what is actually causing your problem.
If you have some underlying disease process causing the problem, then the chiropractor would be able to refer you to the specific specialist that would be best suited to help you recover.
