Several studies have come out that demonstrated sugar is addictive, in one study 93% of rats prefer Sugar over Cocaine.
Over the last 100 years, the average person's sugar consumption has increased 3,600% in the US.
Excess sugar causes massive health problems in the body leading to obesity, diabetes, and ultimately an early death.
A recent study from 2013, entitled "Sugar addiction: pushing the drug-sugar analogy to the limit" provides further evidence that sugar is very addictive.
From the study…
"Available evidence in humans shows that sugar and sweetness can induce reward and craving that are comparable in magnitude to those induced by addictive drugs.
Overall, this research has revealed that sugar and sweet reward can not only substitute to addictive drugs, like cocaine, but can even be MORE rewarding and attractive.
At the neurobiological level, the neural substrates of sugar and sweet reward appear to be more robust than those of cocaine."
*This is why it's important to get off the added sugars. Generally, we recommend going cold turkey. It's generally too difficult to just cut back a little. The ongoing sugar cravings make it very difficult for most people.
