SuperBowl 52, Football, Half Time, Justin Timberlake, and Prince
Superbowl LII pitted the returning SuperBowl Champions, the New England Patriots, against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The game was a high scoring shootout that allowed us to see the rise of a superstar in the Eagle’s back up quarterback, Nick Foles.
Foles became the MVP in orchestrating a big upset of the defending champions.
BUT there was more to the SuperBowl than the gameplay and the commercials.
Timberlake performed the halftime show which I was forced to sit through. It comes with the territory when you live in a house with no other males, but I digress.
Timberlake did a tribute to Prince during his performance complete with a huge projection of Prince playing with him.
This got my attention as I thought back about Prince’s death that occurred almost a year ago.
Prince’s Death and Prescription Pain Relievers.
Prescription pain relievers cause more deaths than cocaine and heroin combined every year in the US. A LOT MORE and the number is rising every year.
It’s a big problem for many reasons.
Some people blame the doctors, the MDs.
There’s much more to the narcotic problem than some MDs prescribing or over-prescribing.
The pharmaceutical companies have a big role because they do what they can to increase sales… of course – it’s their business to sell more pharmaceuticals.
Insurance companies are partly to blame for our current problems with prescription drugs.
The insurance companies will often cover ongoing pain relieving meds or even surgeries that may lead to even more ongoing medication use.
Often limit less aggressive, more conservative care that does get many people better is covered to a lesser degree and it may take a little time to get better.
Treating pain takes a different approach in order to minimize addiction and so many terrible potential side effects.
This brings me to the next point…
We, as a society, are partially to blame.
I’m not blaming you, just hear me out as I try to explain the problem with pain treatment.
We look for a ‘quick‘ fix to our health problems that often have taken years or decades to develop (outside of a recent injury like a car accident, sports injury, or fall).
Often we incorrectly believe that if we take a prescription or over the counter pain reliever and our pain goes away, then our problem is likewise gone.
This could not be further from the truth. We’re simply covering up a warning signal our body is giving us about a health problem by artificially reducing pain.
Taking a pain reliever is not wrong in and of itself.
The problem is if we simply stop there and do not attempt to improve the underlying condition.
Do you want to improve your pain? Get out of pain?
You CAN get better. You CAN improve your pain.
Other types of care, outside of medication, can make an incredible difference.
The majority of people don’t seek out other types of health care that will allow them to recover without addictive medications that we know are problems for so many.
People can often get out of pain.
I know because as a chiropractor, I’ve seen so many people recover after taking meds for years and thinking nothing else would help.
Often these people have been told there was nothing else that could help them by another doctor.
Here’s what any doctor of any type means when they tell you that nothing else can help you…
The doctor, no matter how well intentioned, is telling you that there is nothing else that they can personally do to help you.
They are not able to say that there is no one else that can help you.
Most don’t ever even think about referring you to a chiropractor, often because they don’t know enough about chiropractic to know we can often help.
This is why the FDA recently recommended that MD’s learn more about Chiropractic.
People in pain often end up seeing so many different doctors over many years ranging from general practice docs to specialists like orthopedists, neurologists, pain management, rheumatologists, and more.
The trend is often that more and more medication is given to help the person suffering with pain.
Too often this leads to long term opiate use even though virtually everyone knows that this is a problem.
As we’ve seen with so many people and with the recent government attention about the opiate problem.
There is often a much simpler solution to pain and chronic pain.
Yes it requires doing some different things, but that makes sense doesn’t it?
If the current treatment was working and not causing serious problems then there would be no reason to change.
Paraphrasing Einstein’s quote about change… If it isn’t working it means we must do something different… and that is exactly the problem we’re seeing now in our country.
Seeing a good chiropractor and making some changes in things that are continuing to cause the problem (which causes pain) is the solution for so many people.
What else can help pain sufferers?
Lifestyle choices make a big difference… everything from diet to exercise to sleep.
Too many people don’t realize how much these things are causing them more pain… because they don’t realize this and are never told, they don’t make the major lifestyle changes that will help their pain… including changes to diet, exercise, and sleep.
Many pain sufferers don’t know what to do and many don’t think it will help much.
It often DOES make a huge difference. It also doesn’t matter if you’ve been told nothing else can help you. It’s time for getting another ‘2nd’ opinion to find out if Dr. Hagebusch can help you.
