“I have pain above my hips in my back. What could it be?”
This is a very common question because hip area pain is so prevalent. Recently I was asked about this on a site. The answer should be helpful to you if you’ve been experiencing similar problems so I’m giving the answer below.
We’ll look at some of the many possible causes as well as the best place to start to get better below.
Hip area pain can be caused by virtually anything.
Most commonly it will be related to a musculoskeletal problem in the low back, sacroiliac joint, hip, or something else in the region.
The sacroiliac joint in particular is often an overlooked cause of hip area pain.
Hip area problems can be a sciatica radiating type pain.
Even if it’s a local problem in the back, pelvis, or hips is causing the pain, something else very well may have caused the problem to occur ranging from abnormal movement patterns to neuromuscular muscle tone changes and others.
Old injuries from falls, sports, car accidents, work, and other traumas above, below, and in the area may have caused the problem to occur.
It can be something not in the area as well.
Of course it could be an infection or something even more serious.
So many things might be causing a particular pain.
It’s best to see someone to evaluate what it is that is causing the pain.
The million dollar question is who should you see?
A family dr, the ER, an Urgent Care, a chiropractor, a massage therapist, or a physical therapist?
I recommend starting with a chiropractor for several reasons…
Playing the odds, it’s most likely a musculoskeletal problem for which a chiropractor would be well equipped to evaluate and most likely help.
If it’s not a musculoskeletal problem, a chiropractor will refer you out to get the right help.
It’s much less likely to go the other way meaning if you have a musculoskeletal problem a chiropractor could help generally your family dr won’t think to refer out to a chiropractor.
Generally a chiropractor will discuss contributing factors including lifestyle and ergonomic changes that can help.
Many chiropractors will also give you home exercises to further help and reduce recurrence.
Finally, I’m a Texarkana Chiropractor so I probably have a bias because of my education and experience treating and helping 1000′s of people that came in with these types of complaints.
