Are you worried about the cold and flu season for yourself and your family?
Instead of blaming the weather changes, researchers recommend a more pro-active approach… check your vitamin D levels.
Even though getting out in the sun is still the best way to get D levels up.
It gets a little more challenging in the winter months where even if we get outside, we’re typically covered up.
We previously discussed the importance of Vitamin D levels in asthma, Fibromyalgia and Pain, and another paper on flu prevention.
Research published in the Cambridge Journal found that vitamin D deficiency increases a child’s chance of getting an upper respiratory disease like colds and flu.
Vitamin D is important in activating cells of your immune system which help to fight infections.
Of course, vitamin D is involved in many processes in your body including also bone health.
People who are deficient in vitamin D are at an increased risk of developing infections.
We can get Vitamin D by going out in the sun and getting enough sun on our skin every day. In the colder months where when we’re outside, we’re more covered up. This makes a simple important lifestyle factor (getting out in the sun) more difficult.
Supplementation is cheap and readily available as D3.
It is a good idea to measure your D levels before supplementing, especially in higher doses.
